Dave’s bird, Diego
Falcons can fly up to 230 mph and Dave Mordal from Wreckreation Nation got to experience it first hand when he visited the West Coast Falconry Academy in Sacramento, CA.

He along with two other students learned how to bond with them. They are birds of prey so they are taught how to make them come to them with bits of meat on their leather glove. A falconer use the birds to catch wild game in a natural habitat but since Dave was a beginner, he could only take the birds on a hawk walk and then used the robo-rabbit which is a training tool.

At the end of the day, Dave didn’t want to leave Diego and found out how beautiful these wolves of the sky are…

Dave Mordal got wet this week on Wreckreation Nation at the Swamp Buggy Races in Naples, Florida. The water track is the only official Swamp Buggy track in the country. He tried out a jeep and a race car in the water and immediately got “mud in his blood” according to Barefoot Bobby Sullivan who let him try out his cool looking racer.
2008-9 Swamp Buggy Queen Olivia Kathryn Culp
The day was filled with muddy water and loud noise and ended with the good-natured dunking of the Swamp Queen, Olivia Kathryn Culp an 18 year old graduate of Gulf Coast High School.

Heather Ortega drove the Terminator to an easy victory over Barefoot Bobby Sullivan in the V6 Class Championship and Dave Mordal came in last in the first race and fourth in his second race.
Host Dave Mordal always looks like he has a blast and I love to see all the fun and quirky hobbies and competitions Americans create. Bring ‘em on!
Wreckreation Nation can be seen on Discovery Channel, Tuesdays at 10.

Don Vesco
This week Dave Mordal visited Bonneville Speedway in Utah and got the ride of his life. It’s a 30,000 acrea area of nothing but flat salty land where people from all over compete to see who is the fastest.

They bring all sorts of vehicles from semi trucks, cars off the factory floor, to motorized bar stools. Yes, motorized bar stools. The record for those is almost 50 mph. Dave got to try one of those. Driving on the salt flats began in 1914 and is still running strong today.
Rhonnie Vesco
While Dave was there, Rhonnie Vesco broke a record for the fastest woman on the flats at 233 mph. She is from the famous Vesco family of fast drivers on the flats. Dave Mordal got to join the 130 Club by driving a car over 130 yet not over 140 mph. It looked like a blast!

On Wreckreation Nation this week Dave Mordal experienced the drama of Dagorhir in Pennsylvannia. Dagorhir is a form of live-action gaming which began in 1977. It was insprired by J.R.R. Tolkien and is made of staged battles. It’s a fierce contest between Elves, Orcs, Roman soldiers and wild mercenaries along with pirates and ninja’s. To keep the body count to a minimum, the weapons are padded and inspected before each competition but people do get hurt.

Lawn Mower Racing started in Britain in 1973 but began in the U.S. in 1991. Wreckreation Nation showed the National Championship Finals of the Lawn Mower Racing Association held in Delaware, Ohio.
The engines used start off with a stock 13 horsepower and get modified to 37 horsepower. Once tricked out these lawn mowers can reach up to 80 mph. The racers are serious about their sport and have a love of racing these tiny machines.
Host Dave Mordel got to try out the course and received a crash course on racing. It looked like a lot of fun. Dave said, “It was most excellent!”

Next the finals were shown. Each race starts off with the racers sprinting to their respective mowers. The Grandma racer Becky over-corrected and flipped hers. She was fine but was out of the race. Kevin got the checkered flag.
In the novice class, Dave Mordel got to ride and got in the groove but said his hands were shaking at the end. He finished last and got beat out by a kid. They were nice enough to give him an honorary 1st place trophy.
These people take things very seriously and even have a mowers prayer which started the race. In the finals, they were going in excess of 40 mph. Kevin won the nationals championship.
